Calculating the carbon footprint, a key factor for the competitiveness of companies

Calculating the carbon footprint has translated into a key factor of competitiveness for the companies, not only for the footwear sector, but also of other multiple sectors. This was precisely the key topic of the workshops organized by the CTCR and held in various locations, such as Arnedo and Logroño. The last course took place in Logroño the 28th October 2016 at the premises of FER and was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA) and the company Calzados Fal, which presented its success story, the Bosque Chiruca.

The workshops counted with the participation of around 20 companies. The workshop covered the key aspects for any company to carry out its calculation of Carbon Footprint, to then formalize the registration of CO2 emissions, and obtain the corresponding stamp (REDUZCO-CALCULO-COMPENSO in Spanish). The technical requirements were set out by the technical advisor of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food Quality and Environment MAGRAMA, Marta Hernández de la Cruz, while the Department of Environment from the CTCR presented the practical part, framed within the initiative "wear CO2 and compensate". Within the framework of this initiative, the activity of company Chiruca was shown, its sustainable activity as the company compensates the CO2 emissions through having six hectares of land to be reforested in Bergasa (Spain).

The CTCR, counting with experience with the Carbon Footprint Stamp since 2014, offers interested companies to:
• Differentiate through its commitment to the environment and sustainable development.
• To identify, on the one hand, which processes within the own organization generates environmental impact and the opportunities for the reduction of GHG emissions. Most of them will be derived from the reduction of energy consumption and therefore it will contribute towards savings.
• Calculate and register the footprint at the Spanish National Register of Carbon Footprint, benefitting in areas of corporate social responsibility. The national registry is an official system that validates the efforts of a company to calculate and reduce its emissions.
